Julie Gibson started her SAR endeavors in 1992, after a chance meeting with a SAR member while working as the 4H Leader for Guide Dogs for the Blind Puppy Raising Department. She had been working with dogs since 1984 after attending The National Institute of Dog Training and having the importance of training to the dog’s temperament and reward mechanism instilled in her. The thought of combining her love of the outdoors with her love of dogs was perfect.
Through the years she became K9 and ground team leader of San Luis Obispo County SAR, K9 lead in El Dorado County SAR, as well as a handler, evaluator and board member with CARDA. Julie worked 5 K9s with CARDA and discovered her love of water search. The analytical side of scent movement and varied water conditions made it a challenge to be met. She has responded to over 50 water searches and was lucky to have multiple finds, several while on the boat or still on site. Julie hosted numerous trainings and seminars with CARDA. In 2012, she joined NSDA after relocating to Idaho. She has been a handler, evaluator, since then and served as a board member for several years. She is currently working her 7th and 8th k9s in HRD and Water. Her biggest desire in teaching is for K9 water teams to get lots of boat time and to learn the importance of where the scent is vs where the subject may be and to recognize the subtle changes in behavior.
